District Noir

District Noir is a two player only card game where rival crime bosses will battle for control of the city. Players will aim to collect supporter cards to gain majorities and complete sets to win the game with the most influence, or collect all three city cards to control the city outright. The challenge is all about when to play cards and when to take cards.

My Thoughts

  • Fairly standard set collection game (get type majorities, get sets of each different type) but with a small twist forcing you to take 5 cards (which may include negative cards).
  • With only two choices, play a card or take cards, the game plays fast and smoothly. This also make it incredibly easy to learn.
  • Feels great to take cards at exactly the right time before your opponent lays down several negative cards.
  • Taking cards at the right time is important, but tricking your opponent into taking seemingly good cards when you have better in hand (or the last city card they need) is also crucial to winning.
  • The theme has no influence on the game mechanics, but makes for aesthetically pleasing card art.
  • Multiple win conditions seem well balanced. The instant victory feels achievable, but doesn’t happen frequently.
